What is IELTS ?
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally accepted English language proficiency test to study or migrate to an English-speaking country, such as the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, etc. Taking the test will enable you to seek admission to an educational institute in a country or move to it.
IELTS Test Types
Depending on your goals, you will take either of the following IELTS tests:
- IELTS Academic – If you wish to pursue higher education at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
- IELTS General Training – If you wish to migrate to an English-speaking country.
- IELTS for UKVI – Accepted by United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI) if you wish to live, work, or study in the country.
IELTS Test Format
The IELTS test is structured into 4 sections – Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. It assesses your ability to comprehend, write and speak fluently in English.
The Reading, Listening, and Writing sections of the test are conducted on a single day. The Speaking section will be scheduled on the same day or within seven days before or after. You can book a slot for the Speaking section online, offline or on a date of your preference. The total time of the test is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

IELTS Test Syllabus for Academic and General Training Version
The IELTS test is structured differently for both Academic and General Training versions.
While the syllabus for the Listening and Speaking sections of both are the same, the structures of Reading and Writing sections differ in some ways.
You will attempt four short passages and one long passage in the Reading section of the General Training version. But in case of Academic IELTS, you will attempt three long passages.
The writing section of both versions will have two tasks. You will attempt a letter and an essay in the General Training version. In case of Academic IELTS, you will attempt a report and an essay.

IELTS Test Cancellation Fee
- More than 14 days before the test: 75% refund of the total test fee
- Within 14 days but more than 2 days before the test 50% refund of the total test fee
- Within 2 days of the test date: 25% refund of the total test fee
- On the test day or after the test: No refund will be issued
Note: Refunds are processed after deducting applicable administrative charges and may take up to 8–10 business days to reflect in your account.

How to register for the IELTS exam?
You must have your passport handy when registering for the test and follow these steps:
- 1. Visit the official website of IDP and create an account.
- 2. Locate your nearest test center.
- 3. Complete your registration details.
- 4. Pay the fee through either of the following: Debit Card, Credit Card, or Netbanking.
After successful registration, you will receive a confirmation from the test center. It will mention the date and time of the test.
